HATTIESBURG, Miss. — William Carey women's basketball delivered a dominant wire-to-wire performance Thursday night, rolling past Brewton-Parker 69–42 at Clinton Gym.
After a four-minute scoreless start, the Lady Crusaders settled in behind back-to-back baskets from
Shaneal Corpuz. The Barons held a narrow lead for the next few minutes, but a Corpuz layup tied the game at nine before a
Meyah Doyle basket put Carey ahead. Brewton-Parker added a free throw in the final seconds, sending Carey into the second quarter with an 11–10 edge.
The game swung firmly in WCU's favor in the second. The Lady Crusaders opened the quarter on a 9-0 run capped by a
Brooklyn Cuevas three-pointer with seven minutes remaining. Brewton-Parker trimmed the lead to 22–18 midway through the frame, but Carey responded immediately.
Charlie Gamberine and
Leah Sutton knocked down consecutive threes, and
Addyson Sherer followed with a layup plus the foul to push the margin to 31–18. Sherer added a deep three in the final minute to send WCU into halftime up 34–19.
Cuevas opened the third quarter with another three, and by the five-minute mark a Corpuz layup had stretched the advantage to 43–23. The Lady Crusaders maintained total control, building the lead to as many as 25 before taking a 50–30 cushion into the final period.
Carey opened the fourth with a 7-2 burst, highlighted by back-to-back baskets from
Alyssa Hillard and another Cuevas three-pointer. The Lady Crusaders never allowed the Barons back within 20, cruising to the 69–42 victory. The Carey defense played a major role, forcing 19 turnovers that led to 20 points while holding Brewton-Parker to just under 28% shooting.
Corpuz led the way with a dominant double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds. Ladner posted a double-double of her own, finishing with 15 points and 11 boards.
WCU returns to action on Saturday, January 24, hosting Point University in SSAC play. Tip-off is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at Clinton Gym.
