HATTIESBURG, Miss. — William Carey pulled away in the first quarter and cruised to a 100–48 victory over Mobile Saturday afternoon at Clinton Gym.
"What a great week of basketball for the Lady Crusaders, said Head Coach
Jessica Garriga. "This team is talented, hardworking, and unselfish. I am most proud of how our team celebrates one another, from cheering for Shaneal's 1000th point on Thursday night to coming alive on the bench when Charlie hits the first 3 of her career. Today we were able to get all the players involved for another great team win."
The teams traded baskets early, with Mobile trailing 11–9 at the five-minute mark. The Lady Crusaders then began to separate, and a
Brooklyn Cuevas three with under a minute left put WCU up 21–13. William Carey took a 22–13 lead into the second quarter.
WCU seized control in the second, scoring effectively inside and out to build a large cushion by halftime. After three minutes, back-to-back baskets from
Alyssa Hillard and
Shaneal Corpuz pushed the lead to 31–14. Mobile remained competitive at times, but turnovers and missed shots allowed the Lady Crusaders to pull away and take a 49–24 lead into the break.
The third quarter was much of the same, as William Carey maintained offensive tempo and defensive pressure. Cuevas and
Madelyn Ladner hit consecutive shots to start the period, and
Charlie Gamberine's three with under four minutes left extended the lead to 69–30. Carey closed the quarter ahead 76–36.
In the fourth, William Carey mixed in bench minutes while keeping up the defensive intensity, outscoring the Rams 24–12, forcing six turnovers and shooting just under 44% for the quarter. WCU finished the game forcing 21 turnovers, with the bench contributing 39 points to Mobile's 27.
Cuevas tied her career high with 20 points, while Corpuz added 13.
Addyson Sherer and
Madelyn Ladner each finished with 11,
Leah Sutton had 10, and
Jenna Garriga grabbed 10 rebounds.
William Carey returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 15, at Thomas University in Thomasville, Ga. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
