Crusaders Take Down #12 Indiana Tech

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – After suffering a tough loss to Xavier University on Wednesday night, #8 William Carey bounced back with a 1-0 win over #12 Indiana Tech Sunday afternoon at Danny Owens Field.

In a high intensity action packed game, Indiana Tech was the first to create an opportunity two minutes in, as Filip Maksimovic found himself with a clean look just outside the 18-yard box, but the shot went straight into the arms of Carey keeper Jamie Barry.

Three minutes later Pedro Sao Tiago for the Crusaders let loose a shot from 25 yards out with the same result. By the ten-minute mark, the Warriors had another chance on a cross from Joao Gustavo but the WCU keeper managed to knock the ball over the goal leading to three straight corner kicks for Indiana.

On the third corner, the Warriors played the ball short then crossed the ball to the left corner of the six-yard box. Thomas Cole leaped for the header but could not make clean contact, leaving a slow roller for Barry to scoop up.

Things slowed a bit on the offensive end with each team only seeing one more opportunity at goal before the half. Carey had the first chance in the 24th minute, as Daniel Mulero collected a loose ball and played Tiago down the middle of the field. Tiago took one touch with his left but again, the shot went straight into the arms of the Warrior keeper.

It was not until the 40th minute that the Warriors had their chance. Fabian Hauer crossed the ball into the middle of the box where a Carey defender was waiting to clear the ball. However, the ball landed right at the feet of Emerson Nieto who took one touch to set up Jahiem Rose at the top of the 18. Rose, however, did not make clean contact with the left footed attempt making it an easy save.

Carey resumed the offensive pressure out of the break in the 58th minute. Marc Guerrero intercepted a pass and played Mulero in the middle of the field. Mulero then dribbled towards the right of the 18 and fired back across to the left but Cuba Grant made a diving attempt to keep Carey off the board.

In the 67th minute, the Warriors took a long throw into the box where it was headed on to Cole, but just like his attempt from the first half, could not make clean contact.

Three minutes later it was WCU's turn again, as Teddy Miranda played a ball up the right side of the field to Tiago. Tiago moved the ball up the field then cut onto his left and rifled a shot to the right post. Unfortunately for Carey, Warrior keeper Grant was there again with the diving save.

The exchange of shots on goal continued with Indiana having their turn in the 80th minute. Jack Kennedy drove up the middle of the field and attempted a shot from the top of the 18. The ball was partially blocked by a Carey defender, finding its way right back to the feet of Kennedy. Kennedy again let loose a shot and this time it was Barry with the diving save to keep the game knotted at zero.

Less than a minute later Carey were on the counter, as the Crusaders won the ball on the left touch line. Tiago then crossed the ball to his left to Mulero who moved up the field and dumped the ball just inside the 18 for Santiago Molina. Molina took one touch and turned around to pass back to Mulero who wasted no time in firing the ball into the left of the goal. The Carey defense did the rest, holding the Warriors without a shot on goal over the final minutes of play.

Carey is back in action Tuesday, September 9, as they take on United States Sports University. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm at Danny Owens Field.
