Crusaders Take Care of Business Against BMCU

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Carey go 2-0 in SSAC play as they picked up a routine win at Danny Owens Field, taking down Blue Mountain Christian 4-1.

"Happy with our discipline defensively tonight." Said Head Coach Barry Farrell. "We've played a few different shapes defensively in the last couple weeks and I'm happy with how the boys have been able to adjust. An excellent start to the conference season, going 2-0, hoping we can carry this momentum going forward."

The Crusaders jumped on the game early, scoring two goals in the space of 45 seconds in the opening 12 minutes. An excellent high press from the Crusaders forced an errant pass from the Topper back line straight to Daniel Mulero in the attacking third. Mulero drove at his defender and slipped the ball into Joshua Salas. Salas took a touch past his defender and rifled the ball into the roof of the net, giving Luan Nascimento and the recovering defender no chance.

45 seconds later and Carey had their second. Lewis Green sent an excellently weighted ball over the top of the BMC back line for Pedro Sao Tiago to run onto. The BMC back line kept dropping away from Tiago, inviting him closer and closer. Tiago took the invitation to shoot and made them pay, finishing low and hard across the keeper.

Four minutes later and BMC were gifted a lifeline and a way back into the game. Karim Swedi dribbled past two defenders and was brought down inside the box, leaving the referee no choice but to point to the spot. Daniel Nunes stepped up to convert the spot kick, sending Jamie Barry the wrong way.

The next twenty minutes saw little action with both teams going back & forth trying to find the game's next goal. Carey's high pressing proved a problem for the toppers as they often struggled to get out from the back.

Carey's offensive pressure paid off as they found their 3rd in the first half. Tiago received the ball off the throw. Tiago turned and drove inside before playing a reverse pass to slip in Santiago Molina. Molina took a touch before firing high into the net to restore the Crusaders two goal lead.

The second half was much more of a cagey affair. Chances were limited for both sides as Carey were cautious about going forward, focusing on defending their lead, know if they didn't concede their job was done. BMC were going in search of a way back into the game but Carey's solid defensive shape didn't allow the Toppers any real chances, giving Barry little to do in goal.

The Crusaders eventually put the game beyond doubt as they found their 4th and final goal in the 71st minute. A tidy interchange between Molina and Mulero worked the ball up the field before Mulero slipped in Molina to finish cooly past Nascimento.

The half fizzled out as it had started, with Carey keeping their discipline defensively, happy to see out the game with their lead intact.

The Crusaders are back in action Thursday, October 2nd. They travel to Mount Vernon, GA. to take on Brewton Parker. That game is set to get underway at 6:30 PM CT.
