HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Carey took care of business on Wednesday afternoon as they took down #19 Georgia Gwinnett 3-0 at
Danny Owens Field.
Grizzly's defense is terrified, Entremont's on fire!
Lauren Entremont had all but put the game to bed before half time as she netted a first half hattrick.
It didn't take long for Entremont to open the scoring as she had her first within 11 minutes.
Alessia Navarro pounced on a mistake from GGC Jade Perrin as the Grizzlies attempted to play out from the back. Navarro crossed the ball to
Karen Vilau at the near post who took the ball under control and sent another cross into the back post. Vilau's cross found Entremont at the back post, who sent a wonderfully deft flick into the net off the outside of her foot.
Perrin then nearly gifted WCU a second in five minutes as she played an errant pass straight to Vilau's feet in the middle of the park. Vilau spotted Rirei Sasaki off her line and attempted to lob the ball over her but couldn't get enough on her shot as it sailed gratefully into Sasaki's hands.
Carey's second came from an excellent team move that started from
Nerea Pallas Padilla in the Lady Crusader's goal. Carey worked the ball up the field before finding
Argentina Estrada free on the right-hand side. Estrada strode down the line, passed her defender, and sent a low, driven cross along the six-yard box. Entremont's run across the front of her defender allowed her to reach the ball first and poke the ball behind Sasaki.
25 minutes on the clock and Entremont had hers, and Carey's third. A long ball into the GGC box wasn't cleared properly as the ball fell to
Livia Pertl just outside the box on the right. Pertl drove towards the byline and cut the ball back to an open Entremont who diverted the ball into the goal for her easiest of the three.
GGC enjoyed some tidy passages of play at times, getting themselves into some dangerous positions. Carey's defense held firm, limiting the Grizzlies to shots from distance that Padilla was able to handle with ease.
The second half provided little action as Carey shut up shop, knowing they'd done the damage necessary in the first half. GGC aimed to threaten on the counter but were still limited to shots from distance due to a resolute Carey defensive line.
WCU had a couple of chances to extend their lead, both in the space of three minutes. 72 minutes on the clock and Navarro sent a cross low into the penalty area.
Virginia Mesa stretched and managed to get a touch to deflect the goalwards. A recovering Sasaki managed to stick her foot out and made an excellent reaction save to clear the ball off the line.
Minutes later and Entremont looked to go from scorer to provider as she sent a long ball over the top for
Natoya Atkinson. Atkinson timed her run to perfection as she raced clear but Sasaki's high starting position allowed her to beat Atkinson to the ball and clear the danger.
The Grizzly's best chance came from a lapse in concentration in the Carey backline. Gabriela Rosas stole the ball and ran through on goal. With two defenders bearing down on Rosas, she took aim and looked to slot the ball home but was matched by an excellent diving save from Padilla to keep the clean sheet intact.
WCU are back in action Saturday, September 20
th as they open conference play in the SSAC. They travel to Tifton, Ga. to take on Abraham Baldwin for a 1:00 PM kick off.
