Crusaders Rock Eagles

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – WCU put on an attacking masterclass, as they put USSU to the sword, picking up a 9-0 win on Tuesday night.

A rampant first half saw the Crusaders go 4-0 up within the first 21 minutes. Carey's first came from the spot. A Teddy Miranda cross from deep attempted to find Milos Stajkovic inside the box. Stajkovic was bundled over as he attempted to reach the cross and referee Jesse McBride didn't hesitate to point to the spot. Santiago Molina stepped up and dispatched the penalty low and hard into the bottom right corner, sending USSU keeper David Sandoval the wrong way.

Two minutes later Pedro Sao Tiago doubled the lead. Niall Lovelock played a well measured ball over the top for center back Elias Salminen to run onto. Salminen spotted Sandoval coming off his line and sent a delicate chip over the keeper for Tiago to run in and tap into an open net.

USSU's best chance came on the counter-attack. Jorge Santamaria was released in behind after the Eagles won the ball back in midfield. Santamaria ran in on goal and unleashed a shot, stinging the gloves of Carey keeper Jamie Barry.

Carey's third came courtesy of a Joshua Salas free kick. Molina was through on goal before he was brought down by the Eagles defender. Salas stepped up from 25 yards out and sent a dipping shot into the bottom right corner.

Tiago scored WCU's second goal inside a minute with a well taken finish. Daniel Mulero found Tiago on the edge of the box. Tiago cut inside past the USSU defender and whipped a tidy finish around Sandoval into the corner.

The pick of the bunch came as Molina scored Carey's 5th. Salas threaded a pass into Molina in the center of the USSU half. Molina produced a delicate flick off the outside of his boot over the top of the Eagles defender. Molina went through on goal, rounded the keeper, and tapped the ball into the empty net.

The goal fest didn't stop there as the Crusaders scored two more goals before the end of the half. Mulero produced a well struck finish from the edge of the box before turning provider. Mulero then sent a through ball to Tiago who ran in 1-on-1 unopposed before finishing low, across goal to make it 7-0 before half time.

The goalscoring dried up a little bit compared to the first half, but the dominance did not. Seven minutes into the second half and the Crusaders extended their lead. Felix Rocca won the ball in the middle of their attacking half before offloading the ball to Rico Duggan. Duggan took aim from 25 yards out and dispatched a dipping drive into the bottom right corner.

Carey wrapped up the scoring in the 75th minute from Selmane Azibi. Carey worked the ball from Luka Brandic on the right flank out to Owen Fontenot on the left. Fontenot drove at his defender, breezing past him before sending a low cross into Azibi in the middle of the penalty area who finished with ease.

Duggan thought he had put double digits on the scoreboard, and he would have if not for a spectacular save from AJ Chambers. Duggan sent a thunderous, curled shot that looked destined for the top left corner but Chambers produced a SportsCenter-worthy save to deny the Carey midfielder.

The Crusaders are back in action Saturday, September 13th as they host Texas College. That game is slated for a 7 PM kickoff at Danny Owens Field.
