HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Carey picked up a 2-0 win on a wet and boggy Danny Owens Field, despite being reduced to 10 men.
Carey took control of a wet and slippery game early on against Jarvis Christian. Their first chance came early in the 4
th minute. A quick freekick from
Marc Guerrero sent a pinpoint pass 60 yards to
Pedro Sao Tiago on the right wing. Tiago drove inside the penalty area and tried slotting the ball in the far corner. Moises Schrader was beaten but the ball came back off the post and was dealt with by the Bulldog defense.
The Crusaders' next clear chance came on the 17-minute mark. Guerrero unleashed a fierce shot from 25 yards out that could only be parried back into play by Schrader.
Daniel Mulero picked up the loose ball, took a touch past the Bulldog defender, and sent his effort wide of the post from 12-yards out.
JCU's best chance of the half came from Daniel Sierra. Luis Rosales ran onto a through ball down the right-hand side. Rosales cut inside and laid the ball back for Sierra who rattled the crossbar with his effort as the ball went over.
28 minutes in and the Crusaders had their breakthrough. Mulero picked the ball up on the edge of the box before cutting down the line onto his weaker left foot. Mulero drove the ball across goal, but once again, Carey were denied by the post. Mulero's shot came back with enough venom that the JCU defender didn't have enough time to react as his attempted clearance ended up in his own net.
With 3 minutes to go until half time, Carey thought they had doubled their lead. Some nice interchanges in the midfield allowed Mulero to release Tiago in behind the Bulldog defense. Tiago raced through and would've scored if not for an unbelievable save from Schrader.
The second half began the same as the first ended, with the Crusaders in control. Carey's first chance of the half came in the 56
th minute. Mulero released Tiago on the right hand side. Josh Salas received the ball following his overlapping run and crossed the ball low across the six-yard box. Schrader got a touch to knock the ball to the edge of the box and to Mulero's feet. Mulero curled the ball around the defender but was denied by the post again.
Two minutes later it was
Selmane Azibi's turn to test the Bulldog keeper. Azibi drove down the left-hand side and into the box. Azibi shot across goal, forcing the save from Schrader. Schrader's save knocked the ball across the six-yard box.
Santiago Molina attempted to slide in to convert the rebound, but the ball slipped off the slick surface and Molina could only knock it wide.
The Crusaders were reduced to ten men for the second game in a row.
Marc Guerrero was given his marching order for his second yellow card. Guerrero attempted a sliding tackle but didn't time it correctly and was given a second caution for a late tackle.
Despite the one-man disadvantage, Carey found their second goal and put the game to bed in the 83
rd minute. A long ball over the top found
Felix Rocca down the left. Rocca brought the ball under control and found Mulero's run inside. Mulero took a touch and drilled the ball low past Schrader to double the Crusader lead.
With the game winding down, the Bulldogs were given a lifeline to get back into the game. Luis Rosales was brought down inside the penalty area and the referee pointed to the spot. Rosales stepped up to convert the penalty but
Alex Molto had other plans. Molto made the diving save to his right and kept his clean sheet intact and ensure Carey ran out 2-0 winners.
The Crusaders are back in action Wednesday, September 3
rd, as they host Xavier (LA.). Kick off is scheduled for 7 PM at Danny Owens Field.
