WCU Inducts Three New Members to Sports Hall of Fame

Hattiesburg, Miss.- the William Carey University athletic department recently inducted three new members into the William Carey Sports Hall of Fame. The inaugural class was dedicated in 2011, and each year new members are inducted. This year's class featured two former baseball players and one former softball player.
 
Greg Alexander was the first inductee of the evening. A hometown hero for the Crusaders, Greg was born in Hattiesburg and attended Hattiesburg High School before arriving at William Carey. Known for his ability to deliver in the clutch on the field, Greg was a Business major at WCU off the field. Over the span of five seasons, one derailed by injury, Greg was a mainstay in the Crusader outfield. During his time at Carey, Greg set William Carey school records for Most Games Played (227), Most At Bats (805), Most Runs Scored (209), Most Hits (298), Most Doubles (46), and Most Triples (22). He was a member of conference championship teams in 2004 and 2005. He was an all-conference selection for the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference in 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2008. Following his illustrious collegiate career, Greg signed with the Evansville Otters in the Frontier League. He spent four years with Evansville before hanging up his spikes and pursuing a professional career in the oil and gas industry. 
 
Sarah Beckman was inducted as the softball honoree. A native of Meridian, Mississippi, Sarah played softball for the Crusaders from 2010-2014. In the classroom, Sarah majored in Biological Sciences with a minor in Chemistry. She was an Academic All-American all four years of her playing career. As a second baseman for the Lady Crusaders, Sarah was named as an SSAC All-Western Division performer in 2011 and named to the SSAC All-Conference team in 2014. She was also named as an NFCA All-American in 2014. Following her playing career at William Carey, Sarah pursued her passion for veterinary medicine at Mississippi State University where she completed her doctorate in 2018.
 
The final inductee of the banquet was former baseball standout, Justin Hennington. A native of Leakesville, Mississippi, Justin was a right-handed relief pitcher for the Crusaders in 2003 and 2004. He attended Greene County High School and played his first two years collegiately at Jones County Junior College, helping lead the Bobcats to a Mississippi Community College state championship in 2002. A Business Administration major at William Carey, Justin became the "go-to" guy out of the bullpen for Coach Bobby Halford's Crusaders. In 2004, he set the school record for saves in a single season with 13, as well as the career saves record with 22. He also has school records for Fewest Runs Allowed in a Career (minimum 100 innings pitched) with 35 and Fewest Earned Runs Allowed in a Career with 26. He was an All- Conference selection in both 2003 and 2004 and was named an NAIA First Team All-American in 2004. Following his playing career at William Carey, Justin signed a free-agent contract with the Baltimore Orioles and played professionally for three seasons.
