HATTIESBURG, Miss. – William Carey and Mobile split a conference double header Friday afternoon at Joseph & Nancy Fail Field with the Rams taking game one 2-1 and the Lady Crusaders taking game two 2-0.
After seeing only, a combined five runners over the first five innings, Mobile was the first to get a runner into scoring position, loading the bases in the top of the sixth inning. However, starting pitcher
Reanna Nieman ended the threat inducing a routine groundball to short.
With the score tied heading into the bottom sixth, Carey drew first blood. After three straight singles by
Liz Cross,
Lilli Robertson, and Liala Clark, to load the bases for
Albanie Fussell. Fussell drew the count to 3-0 and was looking to drive in the game's opening run. What seemed to be ball four sent Fussell jogging to first and Cross, on third base, making her way home.
However, a late called strike from the umpire sent Fussell back to the plate and caught Cross in a "stealing home" situation. Cross now caught between home and third base, bounced back and forth attempting to not get tagged out. To Cross's delight, an errant throw from the catcher allowed her to head home and put the Lady Crusaders in the lead.
The Rams though countered in the top of the seventh, again loading the bases this time with one out. Nieman appeared to have recorded the second out inducing a groundball back to the circle with the play going home. However, pinch runner Erin Degruise just beat the throw from Nieman to tie the game. Mobile would then take the lead for good on the next batter, as Gracie Mitchell hit a sac fly to left.
Game two did not have the same excitement as game one, but it did see great pitching from both sides. After two scoreless innings to start the game, Clark provided the only offense WCU needed, as she put the Lady Crusaders up 2-0, sending a shot over the left centerfield wall for her first homerun of the season.
Starting pitcher
Ryanne Hornsby took care of the rest, as she did not give up a base hit after the third inning and allowed only three hits for the game to earn the win.
Carey is back in action on Thursday, April 17, as they travel to Blue Mountain, Miss. to take on Blue Mountain Christian in SSAC action. Play is set to begin at 2:00 pm.
