Lady Crusaders Split With BMCU

BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. – William Carey and Blue Mountain Christian split a Thursday double header with the Toppers taking game one 2-1 and the Lady Crusaders taking game two 3-2.

After two scoreless innings to start game one, Carey got things going after back-to-back singles by Liz Cross and Lilli Robertson put runners on the corners. Laila Clark then drove in the first run of the game on sac fly to center.

Albanie Fussell followed with a double to left center to put runners on second and third but starting pitcher Madison Montgomery worked out the jam, inducing a groundout to third for the final out.

The Toppers answered in the bottom half of the frame. With one out and a runner on first, Neely Barrier provided all the offense the Toppers would need, sending a shot over the left field wall to give BMCU a one run lead. Madison Montgomery did the rest, keeping the Carey bats in check, allowing three hits over the final four innings to seal the win.

Game two saw Blue Mountain take the early lead with a run in the first inning on a sacrifice fly. After being set down in order over the first three innings, the Lady Crusader offense found their stride in the fourth inning.

Cross started the inning off with a single to left and would advance to third on a stolen base and a wild pitch. After a walk put runners on the corners, Clark tied the game on a single to right with a defensive miscue allowing Robertson to score the go ahead run.

The Toppers answered though with a run in the bottom half inning to tie the game. That score would hold until the seventh inning. After a leadoff walk and a sac bunt put pinch runner Kinley Hogue on second base, Ryanne Hornsby broke the deadlock with a double to center, scoring Hogue for what would be the game winner.

Carey is back in action on Friday, April 18, as they head to Pulaski, Tenn. to take on UT-Southern in SSAC action. Play is set to begin at 12:00 pm.
