THOMASVILLE, Ga. – No. 17 William Carey dropped both games against Thomas University, falling 5-2 and 3-1 Friday afternoon at Armory Field.
The Nighthawks struck first, picking up three runs in the second on a two-run homerun and an RBI double. Carey looked poised to plate runs in the fourth, loading the bases with one out, but managed only one run on a
Magen Caro RBI single up the middle.
However, Thomas got the run back in the bottom half of the inning to push their back to three and made it 5-1 with a run in the fifth. WCU again threatened in the seventh but like before was held to only one run on a sac fly by
Harper Dupre for the final margin.
Pitching was the early star in game two, as both pitchers gave up a combined five hits over the first four innings of the game. The Lady Crusaders had an early opportunity loading the bases with one out in the first but Nighthawk starting pitcher Baileigh Herrera worked out the jam with back-to-back groundouts.
In the fifth, it was Thomas that threatened, loading the bases with no outs. It looked as if Carey starting pitcher
Ryanne Hornsby was going to escape unscathed picking up two quick outs, but Presley Lewis broke the deadlock with a bases clearing double to put the Nighthawks up 3-0.
The Lady Crusaders again threatened in the top of the sixth, as the first three batters reached base with a defensive miscue allowing one run to cross the plate. However, relief pitcher Darian Pippin set Carey down in order to end the threat and then worked a clean seventh to seal the victory.
WCU is back in action tomorrow, as they head to Mount Vernon, Ga. to take on Brewton-Parker College in SSAC action. Play is set to begin at 11:00 am.
