MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – No. 17 William Carey split a conference double header against Brewton-Parker, falling in game one 3-2 but bounced back to take game two 11-0 Saturday afternoon at Amory Field.
There was not much offense for the Lady Crusaders in the first game, as they were held to just four hits. Carey though made the most out of one of those hits and a couple of free passes loading the bases in the first inning, as
Madison Prejean drove in the first two runs of the game on a fielder's choice.
The same could be said for the Barons, as they were held to just four hits over the first four innings but three singles in the fifth led to a run to make it a one run lead for WCU. After a scoreless sixth inning, starting pitcher
Reanna Nieman ran into trouble, as BPC strung together four straight hits to plate two runs for the win.
Game two saw Carey once again take a two-run advantage with two runs in the first inning and in the third inning extended their lead, as the offense came to life, scoring five runs on six hits.
Two singles and an error led to the first run in the inning with
Albanie Fussell and
Harper Dupre scoring
Laila Clark and Prejean on singles. Later in the inning, back-to-back singles by
Liz Cross and
Lilli Robertson brought home Fussell and Dupre to make it 7-0 WCU.
Carey finished things off in the fifth, as Robertson tripled, scoring two with Clark following with an RBI single to make it a ten-run advantage. The final run of the game came off the bat of Prejean who ripped a double to left, scoring Clark.
Starting pitcher
Ryanne Hornsby picked up the win in the circle, allowing only two hits which came in the first inning.
WCU is back in action Tuesday, April 2, as they return home to take on Louisiana Christian in non-conference action. Play is set to begin at 3:00 pm at Joseph & Nacy Fail Field.
