MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – The William Carey Baseball Team left little to doubt, as they defeated Brewton-Parker 31-17, Friday night at BPC Field.
"It was good to hang on and to have some career nights for multiple hitters," said Head Coach
Bobby Halford. "Booth hitting for the cycle with Alexander and Rigoberto each hitting two homeruns along with Ratliff also having a good day at the plate. We tried to save pitching when we had the big lead but gave up two grand slams in one inning. It was a bad combination of a tight strike zone both ways all night and wind blowing out.
Tyler Ducksworth started the scoring, driving in two runs in the first inning on a single. The Barons got one run back in the bottom half of the frame, but WCU extended their lead with four runs in the second with
Josh Alexander driving in three of the runs on a homerun.
The Crusaders added to their lead in the fourth, as
Rigoberto Hernandez led off the inning with a solo shot and picked up RBIs by Alexander,
Jayden Mark, and
Jerod Williams. BPC managed to push across two runs in the bottom of the inning, but again Carey answered with three runs in the fifth on homeruns by
DeeJay Booth and
Preston Ratliff.
The WCU offense was not done and made it 17-4 with four more runs in the sixth, highlighted by a two-run homerun from Hernandez and made it a 15-run advantage as Booth hit for the cycle with a two RBI single in the seventh.
However, the Barons would not go quietly and in the bottom of the seventh, cut the deficit to only five, plating ten runs highlighted by two grand slams. That would be as close as Brewton-Parker would get, as the Crusaders picked up four runs in the eighth and put the game away for good with eight runs in the ninth, highlighted by two three-run home runs from
Cam Trosclair and Alexander.
Carey is back in action today, as they wrap up the series with a double header beginning at 12:00 pm.
