Crusader Offense Explodes in DH Sweep

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – The William Carey Baseball Team completed the sweep over Brewton-Parker, taking both games of the double header Saturday afternoon at BPC Field.

"We continued swinging the bats really well all weekend," said Head Coach Bobby Halford. "Jayden Mark had a big day with three homers in the first game and Rigoberto and Deejay Booth continued their hot streak along with Preston Ratliff and Josh Alexander. We hit 12 homers today and 19 homers for the weekend."

"When you play in such a spacious park as ours, playing in some of the smaller parks really plays into our power throughout the lineup," said Halford. "It really got our guys going. Proud of all the guys who have stepped up for some of our injured players like Ty Little who has been really good filling in for Bridley Thomas and Eli Collins. Luke Lycette and Preston Ratliff were really good on the mound."

Game one on Saturday did not see the same offense from the night before, as there were a combined 18 runs compared to the 48 from Friday night. The Barons got on the board first with a run in the first inning, but Jayden Mark launched a solo shot in the second to even things up.

The Crusaders took the lead in the third, on an RBI single by Josh Alexander and extended their lead to three, as Preston Ratliff followed with a two-run homerun. Later in the inning Mark picked up his second homerun of the game to put WCU ahead 6-1. However, Brewton-Parker matched Carey in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game once again.

Rigoberto Hernandez put the Crusaders ahead again with a solo shot in the fourth with both teams again trading runs in the fifth with Carey getting their run on Mark's third long ball of the game.

WCU added some insurance runs in sixth starting with a lead off homerun by Ratliff. Jerod Williams made it 10-7 Carey on an RBI single with Ty Little pushing across the final run on a sac fly to center field. Relief pitcher Luke Lycette sealed the victory holding the Barons without a hit over the final two innings.

The offense from the game on Friday returned for the final game of the series except that it was just WCU this time. The Crusaders started the game off with ten runs on seven hits in the first inning. A solo home run by Hernandez and a two-run shot by Alexander scored the first three runs of the game.

Three straight singles by Ratliff, Tyler Ducksworth, and Mark pushed across another run with Little making it 5-0. Hernandez added two more RBIs to his day on a single to center with Booth also pushing across two runs on a double to right. The final run of the inning came on a wild pitch.

The Crusaders were not done and in the second added eight more runs. Hernandez continued his stellar day at the plate, driving in two runs and later in the inning, Ratliff made it 15-0 with a three-run shot. The final runs of the inning came as Braydon Coffey joined the homerun party with a three-run homerun as well.

The Barons managed a run in the bottom of the second, but Carey made it an 18-run advantage again on a DeeJay Booth RBI single in the third. After a scoreless fourth both teams pushed across three runs in the fifth with the Crusaders runs coming on long balls by Booth and Alexnader.

The Carey offense continued the barrage with four runs on five hits in the sixth to take a 26-4 lead. Hernandez picked up his sixth RBI of the game on a single with three straight singles by Cam Trosclair, Ducksworth, and Brady Logan pushing across the other runs.

Brewton-Parker added a run in the bottom of the sixth but again the Crusaders answered in the next inning this time with seven runs. Hernandez capped his day at the plate with his seventh RBI with Alexander pushing across a run on a fielder's choice. A wild pitch later in the frame made it 29-5 with Josh MacCord scoring two. The final runs came on a Coffey RBI groundout and a defensive miscue.

Carey is back in action on Wednesday, March 19, as they head to Alexandria, La. to take on LSU-Alexandria. Play is set to begin at 4:00 pm.
