Crusaders Defeat West Alabama in Non-Conference Action

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The William Carey Baseball Team used a three run eighth inning to defeat the University of West Alabama Tuesday afternoon at Tartt Field.

"We picked up a really good win against a quality opponent," said Head Coach Bobby Halford. "We started slow against the Tigers but a couple of big hits by Alexander and Ducksworth along with Jayden Mark provided the offense and Bobby McGee came in and shut down them the last three innings."

Hits were at a premium early in the ball game, as there were a combined six hits over the first seven innings. Carey made the most of their early hits along with capitalizing on a couple of Tigers errors in the third. After the second error of the inning allowed Rigoberto Hernandez to advance to second base, DeeJay Booth delivered a one out single to center to give WCU the early lead.

The lead was short lived though, as UWA pushed across a run in the fourth and would take the lead in fifth inning, taking advantage of a couple of defensive miscues by the Crusaders.

Down to their final five outs, the WCU offense found the spark they were looking for, recording three consecutive hits to retake the lead. With one down and a runner on second base, Tyler Ducksworth started the hitting with a single to center field to tie the game.

Josh Alexander followed, launching a ball to the right field wall for a triple, scoring Ducksworth to put Carey ahead 3-2. Jayden Mark capped the scoring in the inning with an RBI single to left. The Tigers threatened in the bottom of the ninth, loading the bases with two outs but relief pitcher Bobby Magee induced a routine fly ball to center field to seal the victory.

Carey is back in action Friday, March 14, as they head to Mount Vernon, Ga. for a three-game SSAC series against Brewton-Parker College. Game one is set to begin at 6:00 pm at the BPC Baseball Field
