MOBILE, Ala. – The William Carey Women's Tennis Team opened their 2025 season with wins over Milligan University, #8 SCAD-Savannah, and #24 SCAD-Atlanta.
"Good start into our season," said Head Coach
Marc Lux. "We played well overall as a team, and it feels good to pick up two ranked wins vs #8 SCAD Savannah and #24 SCAD Atlanta. We didn't lose a singles match with
Victoria Vieten picking up a top win vs the current number #2 player in the Nation. We played well at the bottom of the lineup which is key for our season's success. Looking forward to our next two home matches against #11 Dillard and #4 Xavier University."
On Thursday against Milligan, Carey took the early lead by winning the doubles points with wins at #1 and #3. In singles action,
Isabella Lechuga claimed a point at #3 with a 6-0, 6-1 win. Li-Hsien took the point at #6 with a 6-1, 6-0 victory with Malak Abakane sealing the victory with a 6-1, 6-0 win at #5.
Against SCAD-Savannah on Friday, it was much of the same, as the Lady Crusaders won all three doubles matches to take the 1-0 lead. The first point of singles came from
JiAn Kang at the #2 position as she took the match 7-6, 6-2. Lechuga took the point at #3 with a 6-2, 6-3 victory with Lin completing the 4-0 victory with a 6-0, 6-3 win at #6.
Carey found themselves trailing for the first time over the weekend, as SCAD-Atlanta took the doubles points. Needing to win four singles matches, Lechuga started the process, continuing her strong play, winning 6-4, 6-4 at the #3 spot with
Sunny Logan putting WCU in front with a 6-3, 6-2 win at #6. Abarkane put the Lady Crusaders within one point of victory with a 6-1, 6-3 win at #4 and Lin finished things off with a 6-1, 6-5 win at #5.
Carey is back in action Thursday, February 27, as they take on Dillard University in their home opener. Play is set to begin at 1:00 pm at the Crusader Tennis Complex.
