OCALA, Fla. – Men's & women's swim teams competed in their first ever conference tournament this weekend. Both teams competed in the Sun Conference tournament against eight other schools. The men finished 4
th and the women finished 5
th with both teams finishing ahead of all other SSAC schools.
In the 5 relay races, the men had a variety of finishes, picking up a 2nd, two 4
th's, a 5
th, & a 6
th place finish. Their best finish came in 800-yard Freestyle Relay as the team of
Janos Szabo,
Mate Miszlai,
Josiah Blankenship, &
Braedan Jacobs picked up a silver medal.
In the individual races, Miszlai picked up the Crusaders lone gold medal. Miszlai finished 1
st in the 500-yard Freestyle, only missing out on a conference record by 1.2 seconds. Miszlai later picked up a silver medal in the 400-yard Individual Medley. Despite breaking the conference record, that honor goes to Kevin Keil of S.C.A.D. who just pipped Miszlai to win. He then completed his medal haul as he picked up a bronze medal in the 200-yard Butterfly.
Braedan Jacobs got himself in on the medal action as he picked up silver in the 1650-yard Freestyle. Jacobs broke the conference record, but unfortunately the same as Miszlai, that honor also goes to eventual winner Kevin Keil of S.C.A.D. Jacobs also earned himself a bronze medal as he came in 3
rd in the 500-yard Freestyle.
The women placed top 5 in their relays with consistent results. They placed 4
th in four of their five races and finished 5
th in their other.
Grace Funck,
Eszter Kardos, &
Bisma Khan competed in all five of the women's relay races and were accompanied by either
Chloe Lee or
Eva Mangiaracina.
Funck picked up the lone medal for the women in their individual races, winning silver in the 100-yard backstroke. Funck rounded out her individual performances with a top 5 finish in the 1650-yard Freestyle and a top 10 finish in the 200-yard Backstroke.
Kardos also had a strong showing in her individual races. Kardos picked up three top 10 finishes as she finished 6
th in the 100-yard Breaststroke and the 100-yard Butterfly before going one better in the 200-yard Butterfly and finishing 5
th.
''I'm very proud of our swimmers for how they competed in the meet and for the work they've brought to the pool everyday this season." Said Head Coach
Robert Gonzalez after the tournament. "For an all freshmen, undersized team, we made a great opening statement against the top programs in the entire country. We compete in by far the best conference in the NAIA and had some very successful swims. I look forward to having our swimmers peak with a much-earned upcoming rest and taper and hitting Indiana strong for nationals next month."
Men's & women's swim will be back in action March 5-8 as they travel to Elkhart, Indiana for the NAIA National Tournament.
