ALEXANDRIA, La. – The William Carey Softball Team wrapped up play in the LSUA Invite with a 7-4 victory over Texas Wesleyan and a 5-0 win over Louisiana Christian Saturday afternoon.
"Great to be 5 and 0 and win on the road," said Head Coach
Craig Fletcher. "We played well at times, but we have got to be more consistent at the plate and just take good aggressive swings. It is early and we just can't afford to be complacent just because we are winning. I am very proud of this group, and we just have to be working together as one."
In their first game of the day against the Rams, the Lady Crusaders found themselves in a familiar situation, as Texas Wesleyan took an early 3-0 lead with a run in the first inning and two more in the second.
However, just like in their final game from the day before the Carey bats came to life after being silent for four innings. With runners on first and second and two outs
Albanie Fussell picked where she left off on Friday, driving in one run on a double to left center. In what seemed like déjà vu from the Friday night game as well, was
Julia Shaw tying the game with a double to center field.
After getting two quick outs in the bottom of the sixth, back-to-back base hits by
Liz Cross and Lillie Robertson kept the inning alive, sending Fussell to the plate. Again, Fussell delivered, driving a ball to left field for her second double of the game to put WCU ahead 5-3. Shaw followed, extending the Lady Crusaders led even further with a two-run homerun.
Relief pitcher
Reanna Nieman preserved the win allowing just two hits over the final two innings with one of those being a solo homerun for the final margin. For the game Nieman worked five innings, allowing just one run on three hits to pick up the win.
Against the Wildcats, the Lady Crusaders wasted no time in seizing control of the game, scoring five runs on eight hits in the first and second inning. In the first inning, three straight singles by Cross, Robertson, and
Laila Clark loaded the bases with no outs.
Fussell added to her RBI total for the day with a sac fly with Shaw following suit with an RBI single to left.
Madison Prejean drove in the final run of the run of the frame on a sacrifice fly to right. In the second inning with two outs and runners on second and third, Fussell continued her hot hitting, driving in both runners with a single to right.
Starting pitcher
Ryanne Hornsby did the rest picking up the win scattering ten hits while allowing only six base runners to reach second or third base in seven innings of work to along with issuing just one walk.
"I had trust and confidence in myself and my team," said Fussell. "This weekend I was very relaxed and did what I needed to do to help my team come out on top. Having Julia to back me up takes a little pressure off too."
Carey is back in action Friday, February 14, as they host Stillman College and Georgetown College. Georgetown and Stillman get things underway at 2:00 pm with Carey playing at the conclusion of that game against Georgetown at 4:00 pm.
