Lady Crusaders Defeat Georgetown (Ky.) & Stillman College

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The William Carey Softball Team opened a four-game home stand with a 6-2 victory over Georgetown College (Ky.) and a 6-1 win over Stillman College Friday evening at Joseph & Nancy Fail Field.

"Two great home wins," said Head Coach Craig Fletcher. "I don't think we have played the way we're capable of yet. We have got to get more confident at the plate and make better adjustments. Reanna threw well and Ryanne battled through a tough day."

In game one against Georgetown, the Lady Crusaders threatened early, loading the bases with one out in the first inning, but starting pitcher Addi Watson worked out of the jam inducing an inning ending double play to third.

Carey again loaded the bases with one out in the second inning. It looked as if Watson was going to get out the jam unharmed once again but an infield single by Lilli Robertson scored Madison Prejean for the first run of the game.

WCU added to their lead in the third after Magen Caro ripped a two out double to left center with Prejean driving her in on a single to left. The Lady Crusaders broke the game wide open in the fourth, scoring four runs on one hit.

For the third time in the game WCU loaded the bases this time with no outs. Laila Clark drove in the first run of the inning, scoring Kinley Hogue and later in the inning three straight bases loaded walks made it 6-0 WCU. The Tigers managed to push across two runs in the seventh for the final margin.

Ryanne Hornsby picked up the win in the circle going seven innings allowing one earned run on six hits with four strikeouts.

Carey picked up where they left off in game one, taking an early lead over Stillman with two runs in the first inning. Albanie Fussell drove in the first run with a single to center and after loading the bases, Caro drew the walk to score Clark.

Robertson made it 3-0 WCU in the second with a double down the left field line and after a scoreless third inning, a Lady Crusader defensive miscue led to Stillman's first run of the game. However, in the bottom half of the inning, Carey loaded bases with no outs. After picking up two quick outs it appeared that starting pitcher Avary Lumpkin was going to go unscathed, but Julia Shaw had other plans, driving a bases clearing double to center field to make it 6-1 WCU.

Starter Reanna Nieman and reliever Kate Schroeder did the rest, sealing the victory, allowing only two hits over the final three innings. Nieman earned the win going six innings allowing one unearned run on three hits with four strikeouts.

WCU is back in action tomorrow, as they take on Stillman at 12:00 pm and Georgetown (Ky.) at 2:00 pm at Joseph & Nancy Fail Field.
