HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The William Carey Women's Basketball Team wrapped up the home portion of their schedule with a 68-50 win over the University of Mobile Thursday night at Clinton Gym.
The game unfolded with William Carey and Mobile struggling offensively, as there was a combined six points scored over the first five minutes. Over the next two minutes, both teams traded shots but five straight points by
Jenna Garriga and
Madelyn Ladner sparked a 9-0 run capped by a
Kolten Blakeney jumper to close the quarter, to put WCU ahead 15-6.
The second quarter opened like the first with both teams getting off to a slow start. Also, like the first, the Lady Crusaders caught fire. With WCU leading 19-8 with six minutes to go, back-to-back baskets by Ladner sparked another run of ten straight points to stretch their lead to 21 before taking a 29-13 lead into the break.
The Rams came out of the break and over the first three minutes managed to cut the deficit to 29-20. Blakeney responded for the Lady Crusaders going on a 9-2 run over a four minute span to push the Carey lead back to double digits. Over the final three minutes both teams went back and forth with WCU taking a 46-30 lead into the fourth quarter.
Carey got off to hot start in to final quarter, stretching their to lead to 59-36 midway through and they never looked back. For the game WCU, only shot 36.5 % from the floor but out rebounded Mobile 50-40 leading to twenty second chance points compared to zero for the Rams. Another key difference in the game came off points off turnovers which went the Lady Crusaders way 24-10.
Kolten Blakeney was spectacular, scoring a career-high 31 points and tying her career high with 18 rebounds along with four blocks.
Jenna Garriga and
Madelyn Ladner each added 10 points to the scoreboard, with Ladner also picking up 3 steals.
The Lady Crusaders are set to face Loyola University at 12:00 pm on February 22, in New Orleans, La.
