HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The William Carey Women's Basketball Team defeated Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College 67-41 Saturday afternoon at Clinton Gym.
"It was a nice win for us today," said Head Coach
Tracy English. "We were able to get everyone involved which was really nice."
Carey got off to a good start, as
Kolten Blakeney and
Shaneal Corpuz got things going with back-to-back layups in the opening minute. After trading baskets,
Jenna Garriga drained a three pointer with
Rose Warren following with a jumper to give WCU an 11-2 lead with six minutes remaining.
After almost two minutes of scoreless action. The Fillies picked up some offensive momentum behind a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to three. However, the Lady Crusaders answered, closing the quarter with four straight points to take a 15-8 lead.
The second quarter started with nearly two minutes of scoreless action before a jumper by Corpuz broke the drought. From there, the WCU offense took control, stretching their lead to 27-11 on a pair of free throws by
Madelyn Ladner with four minutes left. Another scoreless drought followed before ABAC broke the drought on a jumper by Emily Gamon. The final minute of the quarter saw a pair of free throws by
Brooklyn Cuevas to push the Carey lead back to sixteen at the break.
The Lady Crusaders came out of the break, extending their lead to twenty-five midway through before taking a 46-23 lead into the final quarter of play. For the quarter, WCU out shot the Fillies 41% to 25% along with winning the rebounding battle 13-7.
It was much of the same in the fourth quarter, as Carey maintained control on both ends of the court to seal the victory. Despite losing the turnover battle 5-1. The Lady Crusaders won the rebounding battle 16-7 while outshooting ABAC 47% to 38%. For the game, the Lady Crusaders picked up nineteen second chance points to the Fillies two while out rebounding ABAC 58-36.
Rose Warren led the way offensively with 15 points and six assists.
Jenna Garriga added 12 points with
Shaneal Corpuz pulling down 12 rebounds.
WCU is back in action Monday, February 3, as they head to Jackson, Miss. to take on Tougaloo College in non-conference action. Play is set to begin at 5:00 pm.
