Lady Crusaders Advance to Finals of SSAC Tournament

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – William Carey left nothing to doubt as they booked their place in Saturday's SSAC Championship game for the 13th straight year with a 6-0 win over rivals the University of Mobile.

"Thought we played well today" said Head Coach Danny Owens. "We were able to score early and disrupt Mobile's game plan. Everyone was able to play, and we put in a good 90 minute performance. We're looking forward to playing in another conference final."

Carey's offense struck fast and struck often as they scored 6+ goals in a game for the 8th time this season.

Lauren Entremont wasted no time getting herself on the scoresheet and Carey off to a perfect start. With just 2 minutes played, Boo Mills' in-swinging corner found the head of Entremont just outside the six-yard box. Entremont sent her header downward and through a sea of bodies as it bounced into the back of the net.

The early goal didn't slow the Lady Crusaders down as they continued to dominate the game. Carey's excellent shape afforded the Rams little space to play and their press and energy afforded them little time. It was only a matter of time before Carey doubled their lead.

Carey's second came following a well-worked team move. Virginia Mesa did well to hold off the challenge from the Mobile's Latifha Pascall before finding Entremont, who turned and played in Livia Pertl who had made her way up from the back line. Entremont moved in behind to receive the ball again and fed the ball into Alessia Navarro just inside the penalty area. Navarro took a touch to set herself and, despite a deflection, sent her shot rolling into the bottom corner.

Carey's third came courtesy of another corner. Karen Vilau & Mills worked a short corner that ended with Mills receiving the ball on the corner of the box. Mills wrapped her foot around the ball and sent a low driven shot into the bottom corner, eluding everyone in the penalty area.

Natoya Atkinson got in on the action, claiming Carey's fourth with one of the cleanest strikes you'll see this season. Argentina Estrada took aim from the edge of the box, stinging the palms of Mobile's Sarah Polk in goal. Polk could only parry Estrada's shot back into danger where Atkinson was waiting. Atkinson met the bouncing ball and sent her half-volley rising into the top corner.

Mobile came out with a point to prove in the second half and started out on the front foot. Their bright start nearly paid dividends as they came close to pulling a goal back 5 minutes into the second half.

Ariana Taylor drove down Mobile's right showing excellent pace. Taylor sent a low cross into Natalie Burt who'd made an excellent run towards the near post. Burt let Carey off the hook as she sent her effort just wide of the post.

Despite Mobile's bright start to the second half and the early chance, Carey largely kept control of the game.

Karen Vilau put any hopes of a Mobile comeback to bed as she netted Carey's fifth. Vilau stood over a free kick, and realizing the Mobile defense had switched off, played a quick one-two with Kokona Nishikawa to find herself in space in behind the Ram's defense. Vilau sent her first effort straight at Polk for an easy save but was not to be denied a second time as she sent the rebound over the Mobile keeper.

The game fizzled out after Vilau's goal as both teams had accepted their fates and were happy seeing the game out.

Lesley Vasquez put the bow on Carey's performance, taking advantage of some tired legs and minds to score the final goal of the game. Vasquez picked up a loose ball in the middle of the field, turned and drove towards goal. Vasquez dribbled past four defenders before sending a dipping shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

Nerea Pallas Padilla & Marie Reinwald picked up the clean sheet in Carey's goal. Both keepers provided a calming presence at the back and made themselves readily available to help the team play out from the back.

With the win, Carey progress to Saturday's final. They will take on the winner of Life University and the University of Tennessee Southern. That game will take place at the Emory Folmar Complex in Montgomery, Ala. Kick off is scheduled for 4 PM.
