THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The William Carey Men's Soccer Team picked up a 2-0 win over Thomas University Saturday afternoon.
The Crusaders took control early with the offensive pressure testing the Thomas keeper with five shots with two of those being on goal in the opening 15 minutes. Each time the Nighthawk defense and the keeper were up to the challenge to keep WCU off the board.
In the 19
th minute,
Daniel Mulero was driving up the field making his way through Thomas' defense when he was taken down, setting up a free kick opportunity from 30 yards out. With the offense set, Mulero took the free kick, with his shot heading towards the bottom right corner of the goal. The Nighthawk keeper made a great diving save, but the ball landed right at the feet of
Dennis Hamzic who chipped it in to give Carey a one-goal lead.
Thomas went on the offensive after the goal creating three shots on goal, but each time Crusader keeper
Jamie Barry was there for the save. Barry ensured he did enough to send the game into the break with the Crusaders holding a narrow 1-0 lead.
The second half was a mirror image of the first with each team creating opportunities but neither defense budging. In the 83rd minute, Carey put the game away for good.
Joshua Salas crossed the ball to the top of the 18 for
Santiago Molina but a Nighthawk defender intercepted the pass and headed it away.
However, the clearance went right to
Rico Duggan who brought the ball under control. Duggan, from 25 yards out, fired towards the right post just clipping the inside of the woodwork to find its way into the back of the net.
The Crusaders are back in action Saturday, October 11, as they continue SSAC play against Mobile. Kick-off is scheduled for 4:00 pm at Danny Owens Field.
