NEW ORLEANS, La. – William Carey Volleyball improved to 18-11 on the season with a 3-1 victory over Dillard University Monday night.
The Blue Devils took the early lead in set one. Carey quickly erased the deficit, taking a 10-9 lead. It was a back-and-forth affair from there leading to the set being tied at 18. That is when the Lady Crusaders slowly took control of the set.
Emerald Owens started with a kill and
Maurin Reyes and
Agnes Hegardt followed with a block to put WCU ahead by two.
Katarina Vulic made it three straight points with an ace and Hegardt capped the run with a kill to make 22-18. Dillard managed to get back within two points on two different occasions with the last coming at 24-22 but Reyes ended the threat with a kill.
A kill by
Natalie Bartholomew started set two and the battle was on. Both teams continued to trade shots until four straight points by Carey put them ahead 18-14. The Blue Devils fought their way back to within two at 21-19. The Lady Crusaders shut down the threat again with back-to-back kills by
Zoie Mitchell and
Jahaziel Alualu-Talamoa with an error, taking the set 25-20.
Dillard came out quickly in the third set building a 16-10 advantage. WCU settled in, cutting the deficit to 16-14 on three straight kills and an ace by Reyes. The Blue Devils quickly extended their lead to 20-15 only to see the Lady Crusaders fight their way back to within two at 22-20. WCU would get no closer as Dillard closed the set with three straight points to avoid the sweep.
The back-and-forth battle from earlier resumed in the fourth set. Both teams took turns with the lead and neither held more than a three-point advantage. With Dillard holding a 22-21 lead, the Lady Crusaders seized control, taking the set with four straight points on a kill by Hegardt and a block by Mitchell with back-to-back errors accounting for the final points.
Carey is back in action on Friday, October 31, as they head back to New Orleans, La. to take on Loyola University in SSAC play. First serve is scheduled for 6:00 pm at The Den.
