MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Lady Crusaders wrapped up play in the Jimmy Faulkner Invitational with an 84-54 victory over Montreat (N.C.).
"Overall, I was pleased with our performance this weekend," said Head Coach
Jessica Garriga. "It's early in the season and each game we are finding out a little more of what we need to work on. We have some consistency with our experienced players and some of the younger players are stepping up and contributing. It's exciting."
Things were close early on with Carey leading 8-7 with six minutes remaining in the first quarter.
Shaneal Corpuz scored five straight points, and the Lady Crusaders offense took off, taking a 21-12 lead going into the second quarter.
After four minutes of play into the second quarter a layup by
Leah Sutton stretched Carey's lead to 16. Over the final minutes of the quarter WCU maintained the double-digit lead heading into the half up 36-22.
Out of the break the Lady Crusaders continued to maintain a comfortable lead, but Montreat was slowly gaining ground, cutting the deficit to single digits on multiple occasions with the last coming with four minutes left in the quarter to make it 45-37 Carey. WCU quickly shut down any hope of a rally, closing on a 13-4 run to extend their lead to 58-41.
WCU continued the offensive attack in the fourth outscoring the Cavaliers 26-13 while shooting 69% compared to 33%. For the game, the Lady Crusaders shot over 47% from the floor and out rebounded Montreat 54-23.
Corpuz led the way finishing the game with 19 points and 13 rebounds with Sutton adding 17 points and seven rebounds.
Carey is back in action Tuesday, November 4, as they take on Dillard University in their home opener. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 pm at Clinton Gym.
