WEST POINT, Ga. – The William Carey Volleyball team fell to Point University 3-1 Saturday afternoon.
Things were tight to start the first set, but with Carey leading by one point, the Skyhawks raced out to a 15-10 advantage behind a 7-1 run. With Point holding a 19-14 lead. The Lady Crusaders stormed back behind five kills and two errors to retake the lead at 21-19.
Point broke the run with back-to-back points only to see Carey respond with two straight points of their own to take the lead again 23-21. After a service error by WCU made it a one-point game, Carey sealed the comeback with back-to-back kills by
Hadley Soutiere and
Zoie Mitchell.
Set two started with the Skyhawks racing out to a 9-2 advantage. WCU settled back in and halted the run with three straight kills by
Natalie Bartholomew to close the gap to four points. Point answered with a 5-1 run to push the lead to eight but again three straight kills by Mitchell and
Jahaziel Alualu-Talamoa, broke the run to make it 14-9 Point.
The same sequence as before followed with the Skyhawks extending their lead with Carey responding this time with three kills and two service aces by Gabriela Marceira to cut the deficit to 18-15. WCU continued to fight their way back, cutting the lead to just two at 23-21. However, they would get no closer as Point went on to take the set 25-22.
Set three started with the Skyhawks taking an early lead, but the Lady Crusaders stayed within striking distance to tie the set at nine all. From there the Skyhawks again used a big run like the previous sets to jump out to a 16-11 advantage. Also, like the previous sets, the Lady Crusaders fought their way back to close the deficit to within three at 21-18. Point quickly shut down any chance at a comeback, closing the set on a 4-1 run to take a 2-1 lead.
Set four started like the first with things tight early on with neither team leading by more than three points. The back and forth continued eventually leading to the set being tied at 18 all. That's when things changed as Point rallied for four straight points. Carey quickly stopped the run picking up back-to-back to kills by
Agnes Hegardt, but the Skyhawks answered with two straight points to move within one point of victory. WCU again cut the deficit to two on kills by Bartholomew and
Maurin Reyes but would get no closer as a kill by the Skyhawks on the next play sealed the win.
The Lady Crusaders return to the court on Friday, October 24, against Blue Mountain Christian as they continue SSAC play. First serve is scheduled for 6:00 pm at the Ben Waddle Sports Facility.
