HATTIESBURG, Miss. – #7 William Carey & #10 Dalton State both claim a share of the spoils as both teams battle in a scrappy 0-0 draw.
"Disappointed we didn't get the win" said Head Coach
Barry Farrell. "It's been a tough week against two very good sides in Life & Dalton State. I'm proud of the effort the boys put in tonight. The draw still keeps us in the driving seat for the regular season. We'll regroup this week and go again, fully focused on our last two games on the road."
Both teams enjoyed spells of possession throughout the first half, but it was the Crusaders who had the better chances.
Carey's first opportunity came by way of a free kick.
Santiago Molina won a free kick just outside the penalty area on the right-hand side after some excellent holdup play.
Milos Stajkovic whipped a tantalizing free kick just over the head of Nestor Mendez, only to be denied by the underside of the crossbar.
Carey's next chance came off some excellent interplay from Molina &
Daniel Mulero. Mulero picked up the ball on the left before driving inside past his defender. Mulero & Molina had a tasty 3-pass interchange that released Molina through on goal. Molina opened his hips just a little too much and sent his shot just wide of the post.
25 minutes on the clock and Carey were beginning to rue their missed chances. Mulero linked up with Molina, again with Molina being played in behind Dalton's defense. Molina took the ball round the keeper and squared the ball to
Pedro Sao Tiago. The recovering Dalton defender just managed to beat Tiago to the ball and cleared the danger.
Carey's defense remained stout and up to the challenge of Dalton's offense. WCU limited DSC to half chances and shots from distance as they refused to give the Roadrunners a sniff.
Carey started slow out the blocks second half and showed some carelessness in possession. On a few occasions, Carey gave possession away cheaply in their own half, almost gifting Dalton State opportunities. DSC worked two opportunities off Carey mistakes, but thankfully shots from Jesus Huitanda & Sergej Misic went high.
Dalton's best chance of the game came as a cross into the box fell to the feet of David Saldana on the edge. Saldana met the ball on the volley and sent his effort just wide of the post. Fabio Barbosa, unmarked, stuck his foot out to try and turn his effort goalwards but the ball whistled past him too quickly.
Carey had a golden chance to win the game late on but couldn't put the ball in the back of the net. A long throw into the box found a free
Marc Guerrero around the penalty spot. Guerrero caught the bouncing ball on the half-volley but he sent his well-struck effort straight at a grateful Mendez.
Carey are back in action on Thursday, October 23
rd as they travel to Montgomery, AL. They take on Faulkner University in a 7:30 PM kick off.
