"We had a good team win tonight on the road," said Head Coach
Tracy English. "I was pleased with our effort and focus. A great week of practice paid off tonight."
Neither team got off to a great start, with the Skyhawks holding the lead for over half of the of the first quarter. It was not until the four-minute mark that Carey took their first lead of the game at 8-7 on a
Rose Warren jumper. Point quickly retook the lead on a 5-0 run but the Lady Crusaders closed the quarter with back-to-back baskets by
Shaneal Corpuz to tie the game heading into the second quarter.
The four straight points to end the first quarter turned into a 18-2 run in the second quarter, giving the Lady Crusaders a 26-14 lead.
Kolten Blakeney opened the scoring followed by four straight points from
Madelyn Ladner. Warren added two points after picking up an offensive rebound with Jeanna Garriga and Corpuz draining back-to-back three pointers to cap the run with just over four minutes remaining.
The Skyhawks managed to cut the deficit to seven on a 5-0 run but that would be as close as they would get, as WCU pushed their lead back to double digits before taking a 36-21 lead into the break.
The third quarter started just like the second with Carey extending their lead even further behind a 13-3 run over a four-minute span. Four different Lady Crusaders contributed during the run with Warren and Blakeney combining for eight of the points. It was all Carey over final six minutes of the quarter, as the WCU offense continued the attack, stretching their lead to 62-31.
It was much of the same in the final quarter of play, as Carey pulled away for good, leading by as many as 38 points on their way to victory. For the game, Carey shot 46% from the floor while out rebounding the Skyhawks 40-27. Of the 40 rebounds, 19 were on the offensive end leading to 22 points.
