WEST POINT, Ga. – The William Carey Men's Basketball Team defeated Point University 77-59 in SSAC action Thursday night.
"I thought we got off to a great start and had control of the game for the most part," said Head Coach
Steve Knight. "Our defense was solid all night and we played with good effort. Cam and Dylan were particularly good in the second half, and everyone played with good energy to put the game away."
Point opened the game with back-to-back threes with
Ankerion Gross getting Carey on the board with a jumper.
Ashton Campbell followed with six straight points with a three pointer by
Cam Brown to give WCU an early 11-6 lead.
The Skyhawks quickly responded with five straight points to tie the game with fifteen minutes to play in the half. The game was not tied for long, as Gross drained a three pointer and over the next four minutes the Crusaders outscored Point 13-4 to pull away to a 24-15 lead. For the rest of the half, Carey maintained a comfortable lead, leading by as many as fourteen points before taking a 38-28 lead into the break.
The second half saw the same as the last ten minutes of the first half, as the Crusaders maintained control for the entire twenty minutes. Point started the scoring to cut the deficit to single digits but back-to-back baskets by Brown followed by a three from Gross made it a 15-point WCU advantage less than two minutes into the half.
The Skyhawks would not go quietly and over the next six minutes managed to get within ten points on multiple occasions but each time the Crusaders responded eventually pushing their lead to 70-51 with seven minutes remaining. Over the final minutes of the game, Carey pushed their lead to as many as twenty points on their way to victory.
Cam Brown led the offense with 25 points.
Dylan Brumfield finished with 15 points while
Jamar Jenkins added ten points.
Carey is back in action Saturday, January 11, as they head to Montgomery, Ala. to take on Faulkner University. Play is set to begin at 2:00 pm.
