Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Crusaders Fall to Mobile

MOBILE, Ala. – The William Carey Men's Basketball Team dropped a pivotal SSAC match-up against Mobile, falling 82-64 Tuesday night at Pharr Gymnasium.

"We were totally outplayed in the second half by a really good basketball team," said Head Coach Steve Knight. "Mobile responded to a great home crowd and had a lot more energy down the stretch. Their size finally wore us down in the last 10 minutes."

The first half saw a fast paced back and forth affair that had six ties and five lead changes. The first four minutes had Carey take the early lead with the Rams answering to take their first lead of the game. Dylan Brumfield, Cam Brown, and Ashton Campbell combined to score seven of the first nine points with the Rams countering with a 9-2 run.

After both teams traded baskets, back-to-back scores by Makeem Roberts and Zandon Haralson put WCU back in front 18-13. Again though, Mobile answered with a 12-3 run to retake the lead 25-21 with seven minutes remaining.

Over the next four minutes, the Rams maintained the lead eventually stretching their lead to the largest of the half at 34-28. However, the Crusaders were the ones this time that answered and in a blink of an eye erased the deficit with just over a minute left in the half.

Brumfield started with a layup and after stealing the ball Brown went coast to coast slamming it home to make it just a two-point game. On the next possession Brumfield pulled down the defensive rebound and made a cross-court pass to Brown who laid it in for the game tying basket. Mobile retook the lead on their next possession and with time winding down Carey missed two opportunities to tie or retake the lead, sending the game into the break with the Rams holding a two-point lead.

The fast paced back and forth action continued out of the break with the Rams opening with three straight points. The Crusaders responded, starting with an offensive rebound, and put back by Brumfield. Brumfield followed that with a steal and converted both free throws after being fouled on the layup attempt. Roberts put Carey back in front 41-39 with an easy layup after forcing a turnover in the back court just two minutes into the second half.

The Rams quickly retook the lead on a three pointer by Trent Moye and for the next six minutes both teams went back and forth with Mobile maintaining the lead. With Mobile leading 48-46 with fourteen minutes to go the Rams used a 13-5 run over a five-minute span to make it a ten-point advantage. This time though the Crusaders did not have an answer, as the Rams pulled away for good, leading by as many as twenty points over the final minutes of the game.

Cam Brown led the offense with 19 points. Dylan Brumfield added 18 points and eight rebounds with Makeem Roberts finishing with 11 points.

Carey is back in action Thursday, January 23, as they head to Cochran, Ga. to take on Middle Georgia State in SSAC action.
