Lady Crusaders Open Conference Play With a Sweep

PULASKI, Tenn. – The William Carey Volleyball Team got their conference play under way in grand fashion, sweeping the UT-Southern Firehawks Friday Night.

The Lady Crusader offense came out swinging in the first set, opening on an 8-3 run with six of those points coming from kills. The Firehawks slowed the run to get within two points at 9-7 but Carey took full advantage of the three unforced errors and a kill by Barbara Guedes to pull away once again. The WCU offense kept up the pressure taking twelve of the next seventeen points to take the first set 25-12.

The second set started just like the first with the Lady Crusaders taking an early 5-1 lead only to see UT-Southern battle back to tie the set. From there both teams would take turns with the lead but with Carey holding a slim 15-14 lead, three unforced errors by the Firehawks proved the difference, as WCU took full advantage, pulling away for the 25-19 victory.

Once again, the third set saw Carey get off to a great start building an early 10-3 lead and would not surrender the lead for the rest of the set to seal the victory.

Suelen Lima led the offense with eleven kills with Elaina Anderson finishing with ten kills. Katarina Vulic led with twenty-two assists while Marcella Hermont had fifteen digs.

Carey is back in action tomorrow as they head to Blue Mountain, Miss. to take on Blue Mountain Christian in SSAC play. Play is set to begin at 1:00 pm.
