HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The William Carey Men's Soccer Team broke through the Brewton-Parker defense, to defeat the Barons 3-0, Saturday afternoon at Danny Owens Field.
The Crusaders set the tempo early, controlling the ball for the majority of the first half, out shooting BPC 26-1. However, the Barons were up to the challenge, keeping Carey off the board for over half of the period. But after the Brewton-Parker keeper made five saves to keep the game scoreless, the Crusaders broke through.
Jamie Wynne fired a shot from twenty yards to the left post to make it 1-0 WCU.
William Carey kept up the offensive pressure and seven minutes later it looked as if
Marc Guerrero had the second goal of the match, but the ball ricocheted off the left post. However, the ball fell to the waiting feet of
Billy Boag who quickly deposited the ball into the back of the net to make it 2-0 Crusaders.
In what would be the final goal of the match, with less than a minute remaining in the half Wynne played the ball to the right corner of the eighteen-yard box to
Kolby Godbolt who let fly a shot that clipped the inside of the left post but found its way into the back of the net to give WCU a 3-0 lead heading into break.
The second half did not see the same offensive pressure from Carey that it saw in first half, as William Carey only had six shots with two of those being on target. One of the best opportunities for the Crusaders came in the 75th minute, as
Djordje Djukovic played a long ball to
Billy Boag who beat the keeper for a wide open net but the Baron defense managed to close the gap and get a foot on the shot to keep the Carey lead at three.
WCU is back in action Wednesday, October 2, as they take on Thomas University in SSAC action. Kick-off is slated for 3:30 pm at Danny Owens Field.
