PULASKI, Tenn. – The William Carey Men's Soccer Team opened conference play with a convincing 3-1 victory over UT-Southern Thursday evening at Grissom Pitch.
The first half saw little offensive action, as there were only two shots by each team with the Firehawks having the lone attempt on goal. The second half saw the Crusaders pick up the offensive pressure and in the 50
th minute,
Caoimhin McConnell played a free kick into the box to
Kolby Godbolt who took aim, but the ball bounced off the post. However, the ball bounced right back to Godbolt who this time did not miss, breaking the deadlock with the game's first goal.
Carey continued to press the attack and in the 74
th minute another free kick that was played down the left side to
Alessandro Villarreal who then crossed the ball towards the goal where the UT-Southern defender was unable to clear the ball which allowed the ball to deflect off Godbolt's chest to
Teddy Miranda who extended the WCU lead.
In the 81
st minute,
Djordje Djukovic crossed the ball from the right side with his left foot to Godbolt who then headed it home for his second goal of the match. The Carey defense held strong until they conceded a harmless goal in the final minute of play for the final margin.
Carey is back in action Saturday, September 21, as they head to Blue Mountain, Miss. to take on Blue Mountain Christian in SSAC play. Kick-off is slated for 3:30 pm.
