WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – The William Carey Volleyball Team wrapped up play in the Cumberlands Invite on Saturday falling to Keiser in straight sets, but rebounding in their final game to defeat Bluefield College 3-1.
The first set started with Keiser taking an early advantage, one that WCU was unable to recover from, allowing the Seahawks to claim the first set 25-13. In the second set, things were much different at the start with both teams going back and forth. Keiser held a 10-9 lead then took control of the set behind an 11-0 run to go up two sets to none. The third set was a mirror image of the second with both teams trading shots at the beginning and KU using a 7-0 run to pull away and take the set, and the match.
In their second match of the day WCU had their hands full against Bluefield College. Things were closely contested in the first set with Carey maintaining the lead early on, but behind a 4-0 run the Rams took a 16-15 lead. The Crusaders responded retaking the lead, and from there the battle was on. With the score 24-22 in favor of Carey, it looked as if WCU had things in hand.
However, the Rams had other plans getting back to back kills to retie the set. Both teams would trade points until a kill by
Elaina Anderson and an attack error by Bluefield gave Carey the 27-25 first set victory.
The second started just like the first ended but with Carey leading 8-6, the Lady Crusaders went on an 8-2 run and never looked backed cruising to a 25-12 victory. The third set saw the same back and forth as the first two sets and just like in the second it looked as if WCU was going to pull away taking an 11-6 lead. However, the Rams countered with a 5-0 run to tie the set.
From there both teams traded shots until Carey once again pulled away to a 20-16 lead. But just like before Bluefield answered eventually tying the set again 21 all. Each team would take turns with the lead down the stretch with the Rams prevailing in the end 26-24 to take the set and avoid the sweep.
The Lady Crusaders shook off the third set loss and opened the fourth on a 10-4 run. From there WCU extended their lead to 19-10 and closed out the set with a 5-0 run to seal the victory.
Carey is back in action Tuesday, September 3, as they host Tougaloo in their home opener. First serve is slated for 6:00 pm at the Ben Waddle Complex.
