HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The William Carey Baseball team split the Saturday double header against Madonna (Mich.), falling in game one 10-6 but rebounding to take game three 9-3 at Milton Wheeler Field.
Hits and runs were plentiful in game one, as there were a combined 25 hits and 16 runs. Madonna got things going with four runs in the top of first but Carey responded in the bottom half of the inning with two runs on a
Bailee Hendon two run homer to right.
However, a three run homerun in the top of the second and a run in the third would give Madonna an 8-2 lead. WCU would get runs back in the bottom of the third on a solo shot by Hendon and a
Kris Jones RBI groundout. The Crusaders would get within two runs in the fourth on a two RBI single by
Bridley Thomas but MU would answer with two runs in the fifth for the final margin.
Madonna once again struck first with a solo shot in the first. However,
Jake Lycette put Carey ahead in the bottom half of the first with a two run shot to right but MU would even things up in the second inning. The Crusaders would take the lead for good in the fourth on a
Caleb Laird two run homerun and would extend their lead in the fifth on RBIs by Lycette and
Billy Garrity.
RJ Stinson would make it 7-2 Carey in the sixth with an RBI single with Madonna getting a run in the seventh. However, Stinson would push the Carey lead to six in the bottom half of the seventh on a Two RBI single for the final margin.
Dario Herrera picked up the win, allowing three runs on seven hits with 10 strikeouts in six innings of work.
Carey is back in action Tuesday, March 12, as they take on LSU-Alexandria in non-conference action. First serve is scheduled for 4:00 pm at Milton Wheeler Field.
