HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The William Carey Baseball Team left little to doubt Thursday night, defeating Madonna (Mich.) 10-2 at Milton Wheeler Field.
Madonna got on the board in the first inning with one run but Carey responded in the bottom half of the inning with six runs on five hits. Back to back singles by
Bailee Hendon and
Bridley Thomas would give WCU a 2-1 lead.
Kris Jones extended the WCU lead later in the inning, driving in three runs on a double to centerfield with
RJ Stinson capping the scoring in the inning with a RBI double to right. The Crusaders would add their final runs of the game with two runs in the fourth and fifth innings to push their lead to nine.
The Carey pitching staff handled the rest, allowing just two runs on six hits with 16 strikeouts. Starting pitcher
Andrew Shirah picked up the win allowing one run on six hits with 12 strikeouts in seven innings of work.
Carey is back in action Friday, March 8, as they take on Madonna. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 pm at Milton Wheeler Field weather permitting.
