HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The William Carey Softball Team opened up SSAC play with a pair of shutout victories, defeating UT-Southern 7-0 in both games Friday afternoon at Joseph & Nancy Fail Field.
In game one,
Brooke Tanner broke the deadlock in the third with a single to right to score
Kinley Hogue. In the fourth inning,
Albanie Fussell delivered a two out RBI single with
Carley Kidder making it 3-0 Carey in the fifth with a RBI single to center.
The Lady Crusaders would put the game away in the sixth with four runs on four hits. Davis and Tanner got things going with back to back RBI singles to make it 5-0 WCU.
Rachel Rodriguez would cap the scoring in the inning with a two RBI triple to right.
Ryanne Hornsby did the rest, as she delivered a complete game one hit shutout to pick up the win.
In game two, Carey took the early lead on a
Dee Dee West triple to center to score Kidder in the first inning. The Lady Crusaders would extend their lead in the third behind a Kidder RBI single to center and a
Madison Prejean RBI double down the leftfield line.
WCU would add a run in the fourth on a sac fly by Tanner and in the sixth put the game away with RBIs by Rodriguez and West (2) for the final margin.
Kate Schroeder followed Hornsby, delivering a complete game shutout, scattering five hits with four strikeouts.
Carey is back in action tomorrow, as they take on Blue Mountain Christian in conference action. First pitch is slated for 1:00 pm at Joseph & Nancy Fail Field.
