Lady Crusaders Pick Up Four Wins in NFCA Leadoff Classic

COLUMBUS, Ga. – The William Carey Softball Team picked up four wins on Friday and Saturday, defeating Kentucky Christian 11-1, Lawrence Tech 9-1, University of the Cumberlands 8-6, and Truett-McConnell 7-6.

In their first game on Friday, Carey had the offense going early, as Susie LeBert drove in two with a double in the first and Brooke Tanner made 3-0 in the second with an RBI single.  The Knights lone run of the game came in the bottom of the second but WCU extended their in the third on RBIs by LeBert and Liz Cross.

In the fourth, Carley Kidder made it 7-1 Carey with a two RBI double to leftcenter and in the fifth the Lady Crusaders would finish things off with four runs for the final margin.

Against Lawrence Tech on Friday, the WCU offense stayed hot, as Dee Dee West started things with an RBI single to center and Madison Prejean belted a three run homer to put Carey up 4-0.  The Lady Crusaders pushed their to seven in the second inning, as West picked up her second RBI with Prejean scoring two on a single to center.

LT picked up a run the third but Carey would add a run in the fourth and fifth to finish things off.

On Saturday, WCU had their hands full against Cumberlands.  The Patriots struck first with two runs in the top of the first but Carey responded with four runs in the bottom half the inning, highlighted by a three run homerun by LeBert.

A Rachel Rodriguez RBI single in the second would make it 5-2 Carey but Cumberlands answered in the third with two runs and would tie the game with a run in the fourth.  However, the Lady Crusaders would retake the lead on a Kidder RBI single in the bottom of the fourth.

The Patriots would not go down without a fight and in the sixth inning would tie the game once again at six.  WCU had just enough magic left in their bats and in the bottom half of the sixth Tanner gave Carey the lead for good with a triple down the rightfield line to score Alex Davis.  Rodriguez would score Tanner to make it a two run lead.  Ryanne Hornsby would seal the victory with a one two three seventh inning.

Just like in their game against the Patriots, the Lady Crusaders and Bears went back and forth.  Truett took the early lead with a run in the first but WCU answered with one in the bottom of the inning.  TMC once again took the lead with two runs in the second.  Carey managed to get one run back in the bottom of the second to make it 3-2 Truett.

It would not be until the fourth that the Lady Crusaders would take the lead, as Kidder drove in Tanner and a wild pitch scored another.  The Bears would retake the lead in the sixth with two runs but Carey answered with RBIs from Davis and Kidder to retake the lead 6-5.

A defensive miscue by the lady Crusaders in the seventh would prove costly, as TMC would plate a run to tie the game and force extra innings.  With the international tie-breaker rule in effect, Tanner would move the runner to third on a sac bunt and this time it would be a Bears mistake that would be costly as the game winning run would come on wild pitch.

WCU is back in action tomorrow, as they wrap up play in the NFCA Leadoff Classic against Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.).  First pitch is slated for 10:00 am.
