HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The William Carey Baseball Team knocked off #2 Georgia Gwinnett 5-4 and then wrapped up play with a 2-1 victory over Talladega Saturday evening at Milton Wheeler Field.
In the first game of the day against Georgia Gwinnett, the Grizzlies took the early lead with two runs in the second but the Crusaders got of the runs back in the bottom half inning on a RBI sac fly by
Rigoberto Hernandez.
The 2-1 GGC lead would until the fifth when Georgia Gwinnett extended their lead to 4-1. However, just like in the first inning, Carey got a run in the bottom half of the inning on a RBI sac fly by
RJ Stinson.
Things would get interesting in the bottom of the sixth, as
Brady Wilson launched a two run homer to rightfield to tie the game. The Crusaders would complete the comeback in the seventh, as Stinson led off the inning with a walk-off solo homerun.
Preston Ratliff picked up the win in relief, going two innings allowing just one hit with one strikeout.
The final game of the day against Talladega was a strange one in that all the runs were scored without a hit and there was not a hit until the fifth inning.
A
Preston Ratliff RBI sac fly in the first would give WCU the early 1-0 lead but the Tornadoes would even things up in the second on a RBI groundout. What would be the game winning run would come in the fourth on a RBI sac fly by
Brady Logan.
The Carey pitching staff did the rest, as the group of
Cory Cook,
Luke Lycette,
Adam May, and
John Snyder combined for a no hitter while striking out 13 batters. May picked up the win in relief going three innings with no hits, three walks, and six strikeouts with Snyder picking up the save.
The Crusaders are back in action Friday, February 16, as they travel to West Point, Ga. to take on Point University to open up SSAC play. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
