HATTIESBURG, Miss. – It was not the prettiest of games from an offensive standpoint but it would be the William Carey Women's Basketball Team that would come out victorious over Faulkner University Thursday night at Clinton Gym.
The first quarter saw both teams battling with the score being tied on four different occasions but it would be the Eagles that would take a 14-12 lead into the second quarter. In the second quarter both teams went cold offensively.
Over five minutes went by until there was a made basket, coming from
Shaneal Corpuz with
Rose Warren following with a three pointer to give Carey a 17-14 lead with just over four minutes remaining. Points were still hard to come by for the remainder of the quarter but WCU would take a 23-22 lead into the break.
Coming out the break saw both teams once again get off to slow start but with five minutes left in the third a Corpuz jumper in the lane sparked the Lady Crusaders offense, as they went on an 11-2 run to close the quarter.
It looked as if WCU had things well in hand in the fourth quarter but Faulkner had other ideas, as they slowly chipped away at the Carey lead, eventually cutting the deficit to just one point at 47-46 with two minutes remaining.
However, the Lady Crusaders defense would shut down the comeback by limiting the Eagles to just one point over the final minutes with the offense converting 9 of 14 free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
Shaneal Corpuz led the offense with 20 points and 13 rebounds for her seventh double double of the season with
Rose Warren finishing the night with 11 points and nine rebounds.
Carey is back in action Saturday, as they take on Stillman College in SSAC action. Tip-off is slated for 12:00 pm at Clinton Gym.
