NEW ORLEANS, La. – The William Carey Men's Basketball picked up a hard-fought win over Southern University at New Orleans, defeating the Knights 93-85 Saturday afternoon at The Castle.
"We controlled them game for the most part, but SUNO always had an answer and never quit," said Head Coach
Steve Knight. "Down the stretch we made good decisions and were able to extend our lead. Didn't shoot it well from the three-point line but made up for it in other areas."
Dylan Brumfield and
Ashton Campbell combined for seven points to give Carey a 7-2 lead in the opening minutes of the first half. The Knights settled in and battled their way back to take a 10-9 lead with thirteen minutes remaining and for the next six minutes things went back and forth with SUNO eventually building a 27-22 lead.
Over the next two minutes though, the Crusaders retook the lead on four straight points from
Ankerion Gross and a
Jamar Jenkins jumper and the back and forth continued. With WCU leading 38-37 with under three minutes remaining, the Crusaders closed the half on an 8-2 run to take a seven-point lead into the break.
The WCU offense continued to press the attack in the second half and with eleven minutes to play a
Cam Brown jumper gave Carey their largest lead of the night at 70-59. However, the Knights would not go down without a fight and fought their way back to tie the game at 77 with under five minutes left in the game.
The Carey offense answered when it was needed, as four different Crusaders combined for 10 straight points to put WCU in front for good with defense holding the SUNO offense to just six points over the final four minutes of the game.
Dylan Brumfield led for Crusaders in double figures with 25 points with
Jamar Jenkins finishing with 17 points.
Ashton Campbell added 13 points while
Zandon Haralson chipped in 11 points.
Carey is back in action Monday, as they head to Laurel, Miss. to take on Southeastern Baptist in non-conference action. Play is set to begin at 7:00 pm.
