Lady Crusaders Sweep Middle Georgia

MACON, Ga. – The William Carey Volleyball team returned to the court after a weeklong break, sweeping Middle Georgia State Saturday afternoon in SSAC action.

The first set started with Carey taking the first point with Middle Georgia taking the next two. From there neither team would lead by more than a point until the Lady Crusaders took a 10-8 lead. The Knights managed to get back within one point at 12-11 but could get no closer. Back-to-back kills by Marcella Hermont and Barbara Guedes sparked the WCU offense, as they went on to close the set on a 13-5 run.

The second set was like the first in that both teams went back and forth at the start and with Carey leading 9-7, they once again made their move behind back-to-back kills by Hermont and Elaina Anderson followed by an attack error. From there the Lady Crusaders pulled away to take the set 25-18 and a 2-0 lead.

The third set was nothing like the first two sets. The Knights came out quickly, opening on a 4-1 run but WCU slowed the run, battling back to tie the set at six all. From there things returned to how they were in the previous sets with both teams trading shots. With the set tied at ten all, MGA tried to pull away using a 5-1 run only to see Carey once again erase the deficit but this time go on to take a 19-15 lead and they never looked back, taking the set 25-18 to complete the sweep.

Sofia Bettini and Marcella Hermont led the attack with each finishing the match with eleven kills while Katarina Vulic had 32 assists and eleven digs.

Carey is back in action Wednesday, October 9, as they head to Talladega, Ala. to take on Talladega College at 2:00 pm and Clark Atlanta University at 4:00 pm.
