HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The William Carey Men's Soccer Team prevailed 2-1 over Florida National University, Saturday afternoon at Danny Owens Field.
It was a half of missed opportunities for the Crusaders, as they had six shots either blocked or went wide of the goal. The first came, as
Kolby Godbolt countered a shot attempt by Florida National in the fifth minute with a shot that went just over the crossbar. Three minutes later
Djordje Djukovic placed a brilliant corner kick in the middle of the box and
Roberto Rangel's header went right of the post.
Carey broke the deadlock in the 23
rd minute, as Djukovic sent another ball into the box off a corner kick that fell right at the feet of Rangel who tapped it in. However, three minutes later a foul by WCU just outside the eighteen-yard box set up a free kick for Geronimo Luna who tied the game with a shot into the bottom left corner of the goal.
Carey kept up the offensive pressure and starting in the 28
thminute had three chances over a three-minute period that missed the post by the length of the ball. After that, things settled down with neither team getting a look at the goal over the final minutes, sending the game into the break tied.
The Crusaders wasted no time coming out of the break, as Marcus Meincke beat an FNU defender in the opening minute, but his shot went right of the post. Florida National followed with an attempt five minutes later with a shot by Diogo Rambles that sailed high.
The Crusaders continued their attack, creating back-to-back chances in the 58
th minute. Godbolt created a one on one with the keeper, but Juan Fermoselle was just able to get a hand on the ball to keep the game tied and on the ensuing corner kick
Elias Salminen's header went over the crossbar.
In the 72
nd minute the game would be tied no more, as
Jamie Wynne played the ball to
Caoimhin McConnell who then dribbled to the left around a defender and fired home a shot into the bottom right corner of the goal. The Conquistadors picked up the intensity from there getting three good looks at the goal, but the Crusader defense forced two of the shots to go wide with the third blocked to preserve the victory.
Carey is back in action Friday, October 11, as they head to Marietta, Ga. to take on Life University in SSAC action. Play is scheduled to begin at 6:30 pm.
