Lady Crusaders Defeat Mobile to Wrap Up Regular Season

MOBILE, Ala. – The William Carey Women's Soccer Team wrapped up regular season play with a dominating 7-0 victory over Mobile Thursday night.

Christina Salmon set the tone early, as she put Carey up 1-0 less than thirty seconds into the match. Salmon applied early pressure to the Rams offense forcing a turnover, she then spun around creating some separation and rifled home the first goal of the match.

Zalma Torres had the next opportunity to extend the Carey lead in the seventeenth minute, as she sent a shot towards the left corner of the goal, but the Mobile keeper made a diving stop to keep it a one goal game. Two more chances followed by Kokona Nishikawa and Esalenna Galekhutle, but neither were able to get a clean shot off, as the ball fell harmlessly into the keepers' arms.

In the 37th minute, Virginia Mesa tapped the ball back to Rocio Fernandez who fired it home from the right corner of the eighteen-yard box to put Carey up 2-0 heading into the break.

WCU wasted no time coming out of the break. Just four minutes in, Alyssia Davis received a throw in from Argentina Estrada on the right side and drove towards the middle of the eighteen. Davis then played the ball to Karen Vilau who sent a shot into the bottom left corner of the goal, just passed the outreached arms of the keeper to make it 3-0 WCU.

Carey continued to add to their advantage and in the 64thminute, Fernandez played a corner kick right to the middle of the goal where Livia Pertl was there to head it home. The fifth goal of the match would also come off a corner kick. Kristina Decker played the ball out to Torres who drove to the left corner of the eighteen and then fired a shot to the opposite corner of the goal.

Less than a minute later, Torres picked up her second goal, as she collected a loose ball and fired a shot almost identical to the one before to extend the Lady Crusaders' lead to six. With ten minutes to go in the match Mesa played the ball forward to Lesley Vasquez who was just able to beat the keeper to the ball and tap it in for the final goal of the match.

Carey is back in action Thursday, October 31, as they host a SSAC quarterfinal match. Play is set to begin at 11:00 with the opponent to be determined at a later date.
