WEST POINT, Ga. – Carey picked up their 3
rd win in 6 days on Wednesday afternoon with a dominant win over SSAC competition Point University.
The Carey offense wasted no time getting themselves on the board in spectacular fashion. An in-swinging corner from
Rocio Fernandez found it's way directly into the net. Fernandez's corners caused problems throughout the first half for the Sky Hawks with several Crusader chances coming via Fernandez.
Esalenna Galekhutle thought she had doubled the Crusader's lead twice in the next 20 minutes but found herself denied by the crossbar and the offside flag. Galekhutle's first chance came off a Fernandez corner. The ball fell to Galekhutle at the back post, who then rifled the ball off the crossbar and cleared by the Skyhawk defense. Fernandez again created the next chance for Galekhutle. A perfectly chipped through ball found the run of Galkehutle who finished well but had gone a second or two early and was caught offside.
The Carey offense kept knocking on the Sky Hawk door by Lisa Kelm refused to let them in for the majority of the half. With five minutes left on the clock it took some intricate play to finally double Carey's lead.
Kokona Nishikawa played the ball into
Virginia Mesa's feet 25 yards out from goal. Mesa's well timed ball round the corner split the Point defense for
Lesley Vasquez to run onto. With Vasquez baring down on Kelm in the point goal, she made the very unselfish decision to square the ball to an open
Kristina Decker to pass the ball into the open net.
Decker nearly turned scorer to provider two minutes later. Decker's corner found
Meghan Romines on the edge of the penalty area. Romines took a touch to shift the ball onto her unfavored left foot and drilled the ball low through a sea of bodies. Unfortunately, her shot hit the post and bounced across goal with no one on hand to tap in the rebound.
The Crusader's started the second half sluggishly, failing to muster much offense in the opening ten minutes. Despite their slow start they didn't look like conceding and would kick on for a flurry of goals in the second half.
Christina Salmon kickstarted the rush of second half goals. An
Argentina Estrada throw on the right-hand side found the feet of Salmon in the corner. Salmon turned inside, beating her defender, and crossing the ball to the back post looking for the run of Mesa. Mesa was not needed as Salmon's cross turned shot sailed straight over Kelm and into the Skyhawk goal.
Alyssia Davis was the next Crusader to get on the scoresheet. Vasquez went on a jinking run down the left-hand side. Beating two defenders, Vasquez squared the ball across the six-yard box and found an open Davis in the middle of the goal who, despite not getting the cleanest connection on her strike, stroked the ball into the back of the net.
A well worked fifth goal allowed Vasquez to turn provider to scorer.
Tiare Hermosilla drove down the right-hand side, beating her defender. Her cross reached the feet of
Valeria Barajas, who showed great awareness to stepover the pass, taking two defenders out the game. The ball then reached the feet of Vasquez who took a touch and coolly slotted the ball into the bottom right corner.
Vasquez claimed her second goal in as many minutes for the Crusaders sixth. An overhit Fernandez cross was retrieved by Hermosilla. She then beat her defender and put a cross back into the box. Kelm came out the goal to try and claim the cross but could only knock it onto the head of Vasquez who snuck between two defenders to nod into the empty net.
The game would turn from bad to worse for the Skyhawks as the last goal of the game would come courtesy of Point defender Hannah Delp. A short Crusader corner to
Karen Vilau was put into the Point penalty area. Delp stuck out a foot to try and clear the cross but inadvertently sliced the clearance over her keeper and into her own goal.
Nerea Pallas Padilla claimed the clean sheet in the Crusader net. Padilla only had the solo save to make but remained a constant presence in the Carey net and ensured the Crusaders kept a 0 on the scoreboard.
The Crusaders are back on home soil this Saturday, as they host Faulkner at
Danny Owens Field. That game is set to get underway at 1:30 PM.
