HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The William Carey Baseball Team used some late game magic to take both games of a Friday double header against Middle Georgia, taking game one 5-1 and game two 6-5 in 10 innings at Milton Wheeler Field.
In game one, both teams starting pitchers were locked in but in the third inning the Crusaders were able to scratch across one run on a
Brady Wilson RBI single to right. Carey would hold the 1-0 lead until the sixth inning when they would add some insurance runs.
A Knight error would plate the first run and
Preston Ratliff followed with a three run homerun to left to give WCU a five run lead. MGA would manage to get one in the seventh but starting pitcher
Andrew Shirah induced a groundball out to the next batter to end the game.
Shirah picked up the win on the mound going all seven innings allowing one run on four hits with nine strikeouts.
Game two was all Middle Georgia at the start, as they took the early lead with two runs in the second and one in the third. The Carey offense got on the board in the fifth on a sac fly by
RJ Stinson but the Knights answered with two in the top of the sixth to take a 5-1 lead.
It would not be until the eighth inning that the WCU offense got to MGA starting pitcher Ronald Zayas. After an out to start the inning, two singles and walk would load the bases for
Brady Logan. Logan would deliver what Carey had been missing with a two run double to left field. The Crusaders would get within run on a sac fly by
Rigoberto Hernandez.
WCU carried the momentum into the ninth inning. With a runner on second base and two outs,
Bailee Hendon beat out a slow roller to short with the throw getting away allowing
Jake Lycette to score to tie the game a five all. Extra innings would follow and in the 11
th inning, Stinson would lead off the inning with a double down the left field line.
Two strikeouts and two intentional walks followed and the comeback for the Crusaders would be completed in an unusual fashion; a wild pitch.
John Snyder picked up the win, going two innings allowing only two hits with four strikeouts.
Carey is back in action tomorrow as they wrap up the series with a single game at 1:00 pm at Milton Wheeler Field.
