Crusaders Sweep Dillard University

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The William Carey Baseball team completed the series sweep, taking both games of the double header against Dillard University, Saturday afternoon at Milton Wheeler Field.

Game one saw both teams putting on an offensive clinic, as they combined for 24 hits and 26 runs, in only seven innings of play.  Dillard opened the game with two runs in the first with Carey plating four in the bottom half of the inning.  DU used a three run homerun in the second to take 5-4 lead but WCU answered again in the bottom of the second with RBIs by Jake Lycette and Preston Ratliff.

After a scoreless third both teams once again traded runs in the fourth with the game being tied at eight all.  The Blue Devils took a 10-8 lead in the fifth but like before the Crusaders got four runs in the bottom of the inning.  A Lycette RBI and an inside the park two run homerun by Ratliff would Carey a 12-10 lead.

Dillard kept on fighting and pushed across two more runs in the sixth to tie the game but WCU had the answer once again  A bases loaded walk by Patrick Lee would score the first run with the other coming on a passed ball to put the Crusaders up 14-12.

John Snyder came on in relief and worked a three up three down seventh to secure the win and pick up the save.

The Crusader offense stayed hot in game two, as RBI singles by Lee, Ratliff, and Bailee Hendon gave Carey a 3-0 lead after the first.  Lee continued his strong day at the plate plating two in the second with Lycette making it 6-0 WCU.

Dillard got on the board in the fourth with one run but the Crusaders got a solo homerun from RJ Stinson a two RBI single by Caleb Laird in the bottom of the fourth to make 9-1 WCU.  Both teams traded runs in the fifth and Dillard would get three runs in the sixth to make it 10-5 Carey.

However, the Crusaders dealt the final blow in the bottom of the sixth, as Lee sent a shot down the right field line for a grand slam with Lycette launching a solo homerun for the final margin of 16-5.

Lane Jarreau picked up the win on the mound going five innings, allowing two runs on six hits with seven strikeouts.

WCU is back in action Wednesday, March 8, as they travel to West Point, Ga. to take on Point University.  First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
