MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – The William Carey Softball Team swept Brewton-Parker College in SSAC action, taking game one 3-2 and game two 4-0, Thursday afternoon at the BPC Softball Field.
In game one, the Lady Crusaders were held hitless until the fourth inning, but a lead-off single by
Rachel Rodriguez broke up the no hitter and got the Carey offense going. After a stolen base and single moved Rodriguez to third.
Dee Dee West would break the scoreless tie with a sac fly to center. A few batters later
Kinley Hogue would make it 2-0 WCU with a single to left.
Rodriguez would put the Lady Crusaders up three in the fourth stealing second and third and scoring on a throwing error by the Barons. However, in the bottom of the sixth BPC mounted a comeback, scoring two runs on three hits but starting pitcher
Haley Nations settled back down getting a strikeout to end the threat and then got three straight strikeouts in the seventh to preserve the win.
Nations picked up the win going all seven innings allowing two runs on six hits with seven strikeouts.
Runs and hits were hard to come by in game two as well but WCU made the most of their opportunities. Some aggressive base running by
Susie LeBert on a Hogue single in the second would give Carey the early lead.
In the third, the Lady Crusaders would add another run on a
Carley Kidder RBI single to center and a double steal in the fifth would make it 3-0 WCU. Carey would add their final run of the game in the sixth on an
Alex Davis RBI triple to right.
Ryanne Hornsby picked up the win in the circle going seven innings allowing no runs on seven hits.
The Lady Crusaders are back in action tomorrow as they head to Cochran, Ga. to take on #13 Middle Georgia State in conference play. First pitch of the double header is slated for 1:00 pm.
