NEW ORLEANS, La. – The William Carey Men's Basketball Team got their season underway with an 85-76 victory over Southern University at New Orleans Saturday afternoon.
WCU found themselves down 10-5 after five minutes but quickly erased the deficit, taking a 12-11 lead with 12 minutes to play in the half. From there both teams went back and forth. With Carey holding a 17-16 lead, back to back baskets by
Dylan Brumfield sparked a 14-2 run to push the WCU lead to 13. The Crusaders would maintain a double digit lead for the majority of the final minutes of the half before taking a 39-31 lead into the break.
Coming out of the break, Carey quickly pressed the attack, pushing their lead back to double digits, opening on an 8-2 run. From there the Crusaders maintained a comfortable lead, leading by as many as 21 points on their way to victory.
Dylan Brumfield led the offense with 24 points and six rebounds.
Ashton Campbell added 16 points and six rebounds with
Kaeden Laws finishing with 11 points and seven rebounds.
Carey is back in action Thursday, November 2, as they head to Montgomery, Ala. to take on Florida Memorial in the SSAC/SUN Challenge. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
