PULASKI, Tenn. – Coming off a thrilling 3-2 win over Dillard University Tuesday night, the William Carey Volleyball Team avenged an early season loss to UT-Southern, defeating the Firehawks 3-1 Friday night.
After both teams went back and forth to start the match, UTS used an 8-1 run to take a 17-10 lead, to pull away for god, taking the set 25-18. The second set saw the same start as the first but it would be the Lady Crusaders this time that pulled away using a 9-3 run to take a 15-9 lead.
However, UT-Southern battled back to cut the deficit to two on multiple occasions late in the set but could get no closer, as Carey would hold on for the 25-22 win. Things remained tight in the third set until the Firehawks went on an 8-0 run to take a 15-8 lead. WCU kept on battling and with UTS leading 22-16, the Lady Crusaders rallied going on a 9-1 run take the set 25-23.
Both teams took turns with the lead in the fourth set until the Firehawks slowly pulled away to a 16-11 advantage. However, Carey once again battled back with a 12-1 run to take the lead for good, going on to take the set 25-20 and the match.
Elaina Anderson led the attack with 17 kills while
Barbara Guedes finished with 13 kills and 11 digs.
Lia Romas Bonilla and
Ljiljana Balic added 22 and 15 assist with
Laura Almeida and
Amy Wright finishing with 14 and 10 digs.
WCU is back in action tomorrow, as they head to Blue Mountain, Miss. to take on Blue Mountain Christian in SSAC action. First serve is slated for 1:00 pm.
